I’m such a whore!!!! (For music that is…)

Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence….

I’m not sure why but I have always loved music. Doesn’t matter really what kind it is. If it has a message or good lyrics that speak to me, I’ll listen to it. I started singing when I was about five years old. My mom was a concert pianist so it was kind of a natural thing for me to pick up. The first song I ever learned was Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. My mother played it beautifully and even at the age of five the lyrics moved me. Well as much as a five year old can be moved by such lyrics….

As I got older I felt my love for music grow stronger as did my voice. I sang everything, all the time. I got involved in every single choir I could while I was in school. I played lead roles in musicals, I acted, and I danced. Hell I was happy just to sing in the chorus of musicals. One of my favorites was Jesus Christ Superstar. Our Jesus wore a Superman t-shirt throughout the performance. As Jesus sang Gethsemane, I became overwhelmed and burst into tears. That musical gets to me still.

My voice isn’t what it used to be but I can still sing a bit of Pink or Stevie Nicks. And even Adele on a good day. Now Adele, whoa that woman’s music just gets to me. Do not be in a sad mood and listen to her. You’ll be a crying mess huddled in the corner, petting your dog and singing the lyrics. Can you tell I’ve been there, done that?

I’m kind of into Gotye and Kimbra right now. “Harry” is my music pusher, and I’m his. We search out new music and share it with each other. It feels good to know there’s someone out there as passionate as I am. He’s even made me love Pearl Jam. I wasn’t much of a fanbefiore, but I have to say Eddie Vedder could sing me the phone book now and I’d swoon. It’s not that he has the greatest voice in the world. But you can tell when he sings a song, he feels every word. I’ve gotten “Harry” to listen to Florence + the Machine. He is now hooked on them. Talk about outstanding talent! Florence Welch’s lyrics are profound. They speak to my soul.

I like that my kids have picked up my love of music. It was kind of cool when Meg told me she was going to be a music education major in college. Unbeknownst to her, my biological mother was a music education major finishing her graduate degree at MSU when she got pregnant with me. She gave me up for adoption just after she finished school and then started teaching. Maybe that’s why I’m so passionate about music. It keeps me close to my birth mother. I know nothing more about her. Just that she gave me a love for music, and then I passed it onto my kids. Roger Darling said to me a couple of days ago that he couldn’t imagine what our lives would be without it…..

Bridge Over Troubled Water now means everything to me. It’s the first song my mom and I sang together. It’s the first song that I loved. It’s the first song that I identified with. I like to think it’s how I love….. Just typing the words below gets to me…..

When you’re weary, when you’re out on the street, when evening falls so hard, I will comfort you….. I’ll take your part.

And if you need a friend, I’m sailing right behind, Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down…..

Sigh…..

  1. That Simon & Garfunkel song is one my dad used to sing in the bath when I was a kid – whenever I think about it, it takes me straight back to my childhood. Thanks for the nostalgia trip. 🙂

  2. Yeah! I said wow, here we go….
Okidoki, It’s about music! yes, it’s the sound of the feelings… even if it takes you straight back to the … toilet.
    Nobody is ferpect 🙂
    Great post as usual!

    • Oh Dugutigui thanks for the compliment. I think. 🙂 I love music. Always have, always will. I’m so excited because I actually get to see one of my favorite Indie Rock bands next week, Say Anything. Max Bemis speaks right to my heart with every lyric. Check his band out. I think you’ll like them. It’s a band for young people. But honey I’ve got a young heart and spirit, so I’ll fit right in. Giggle.
